Taking inspiration from her own award-winning family memoir, Crossing, Sabrin Hasbun will deliver a workshop that focuses on life writing to actively reclaim our narratives, in a time of dehumanisation, growing censorship and erasure. This is the second year of Awraq festival. This year we are trying something different – we are centering the festival around organising a small UK tour for Palestinian-American poet Fady Joudah. His poetry and point of view as a Palestinian in this time of genocide are important for us to share, and we are very glad to be able to bring him to the UK. The Tour will have an event in Bath on the 6th June 2025 which will be recorded and live streamed online, an event in Bristol on the 7th June, and in Cardiff on the 9th June. Follow this link for PWYC About the book: Crossing, is a memoir-family saga which retraces the love story between Sabrin’s Palestinian father and Italian mother, and the life of her half-Italian, half-Palestinian family from the 1960s to 2020. After the loss of her mother, Sabrin tries to renegotiate her mixed identity and understand her mother’s choices from an oppressive childhood in a village in Tuscany to love and community activism in Palestine. This is a story about grief and what it means to lose not only loved ones, but also a place in the world and a sense of belonging. About the author: Sabrin Hasbun is a Palestinian-Italian transnational writer. She has always had to mediate between cultures and every day for her is a journey across borders. Sabrin believes in the extremely generative power of collective creation and action and her research focuses on collaborative practices to explore histories of marginalised groups and decolonisation strategies. She has recently worked as writer, editor, translator, and trainer for several institutions around the world and published articles, both individual and collaborative, about collective creation in communities. She now works as a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Cardiff Met university, specialising in writing for liberated imaginations and alternative futures. Sabrin‘s first book, the family memoir Crossing: a love story between Italy and Palestine, won the Footnote x Counterpoints Writing Prize and will be published in May 2025.
